I stumbled across a used copy of Winning Eleven 8 for a cheap price and as I'm always up for a good bargain I snapped it up. I used to have a gamepad for my PC, but it doesn't work with XP so I'm stuck using the keyboard. I thought this would be impossible but I found it surprisingly easy to get into the game and play it with the keyboard even though I couldn't do all of the fancy key combos. It's been many years since I played FIFA, and I always hated it. It felt rigid like I was never in control. It didn't seem realistic and I never enjoyed playing it.My first thought in WE8 was 'oh god it's a crappy console port and why can't I use the mouse!!??'

Feb 01, 2005 World Soccer Winning Eleven 8 International is KCET's best soccer game to date, which basically makes it the best soccer game ever made. No specific info about version 1.0. Please visit the main page of WINNING ELEVEN 8 on Software Informer. Share your experience.
So that really is my only negative so far. I only played for 2 hours last night and easily beat Saudi Arabia on the easy level. Ok, so that's nothing to be proud of but it does mean that I can actually play with the keyboard. The things I love so far?
Well the little details are incredible and the fact that the ball keeps rolling when stop. That last detail makes all the difference in the world.
No more glue!I managed to score some wonderful goals, some planned well some not so. Typically with football games in the past I would use the old tactic of rush up the field and score. WE8 at least lets me play some realistic football. I'm sure the same unrealistic tactic would work on the easy level but above that I'm sure I will need more skill. The deft touches the players can do are wonderful. Michael Owen took on the keeper, tapped it out his reach, ran round and scored.
Beautifully done, realistic but I swear I didn't tell him to do it! Another one (which may also have been scripted) was a low shot was deflected off the keeper's hand to one of my player's who tapped it into the back of the net. Again, realistic and very satisfying.Having not played FIFA for many years (at least 6?), I have to ask, why do they keep making sequels when WE8 is this good?So after all that writing, what are your favourite things about WE8? Any tips or scoring techniques? Thanks.
Count me as interested!I recently discovered Sensible Soccer 2006 on Gametap, and have had a great time with it. The controls are very intuitive, especially using a gamepad. The game is a bit simplistic and frenetic, but the physics of the players and ball feels pretty natural, something that often doesn't feel right in sports games. It sounds like Winning Eleven might have the same sort of fluid controls with a little more depth and strategy than Sensible Soccer - if that's the case, I might go sift through some bargain bins for this one.
I know I've seen it at my local EB before, but I generally avoid sports games because I find the controls wooden and overly complicated. I don't know anyone else that plays sports sims on their PCs either, that may be why this thread is seeing light traffic - View image here. In fact i had to google the word WE8 to know about that:PSo, i don't know other arsians but I just discovered this game. View image here: -Ah! I put Winning Eleven 8 in the title and the first sentence so I assumed that using WE8 after that would be ok. Winning Eleven/Pro Evolution is indeed the greatest soccer game franchise in the history of soccer games. I recently got Pro Evolution 2007 for the 360.
Haven't played it enough to take in all of the changes yet and the graphics are a bit of a letdown but the gameplay is as great as ever. Its very realistic unlike FIFA. However, most soccer/football fans get annoyed because Konami doesn't buy all the naming rights for all the teams.EDIT: PE2007 is Winning Eleven 10 I believe =)scoring tips? Good tactics! - View image here: - WE series is not an arcade-y game at all.
Indeed, the Winning Eleven series (or Pro Evolution Soccer in Europe) is the only game has me racking up 3 digit game hours on my PS2.As for strategy.think like playing real football. Do you prefer slow build up or scoring on the break?
For me, I'd say 90% of my goals come from fast-break.I use 4-3-3 type A-2 formation, and let the game decides which player is best suited for that position. If you don't like to let game decide your player selection, I suggest to use players with highest speed and dribble stats as your three forwardsUse your full-backs to dribble the ball forward, and once he reaches the half-way line, do a forward through pass down the flank. One of your forwards will usually latch on to the pass. Coninue sprinting down the flank with your forward, then look at your radar to see where the other two forwards are.If anyone of them has reached the penalty area already, depending where the defenders are, use normal cross (single tap on O) or low cross (double tabp on O) in conjunction with your analogue stick to target the cross at near, middle or far post. Ground cross (tripple tap on O) has the highest scoring chance if there is no defender between your 'crosser' and your receiver. If no one has reached the penalty area yet, you can try to cut inside to the penalty area from the flank, and dribble around the perimeter of the box and look for a chance to score / pass. Remember to practice dummy shooting (square button followed quickly by X button and change of running direction). You can get foul in the penalty area at times when some defenders following you closely in the box by doing the dumyy shooting.
Helps in one-on-one situation with keeper too.Hope that helps - View image here: -Questions on the 360 version: How does it play on Xbox Live, and does it support 16:9 widescreen? OP: get a gamepad or usb adaptor for your favorite console controller. I doubt it is possible to really play well without one as the game uses so many buttons and combinations of buttons. In general, I like playing in a 3-2-1-4, since otherwise it can be tough to get wide players to continue their runs forward. Nothing pisses me off like holding the ball up in the box and seeing a midfielder standing alone 25 yards out. A lot of my goals come from super cancel (R1+R2) cutbacks and square passes in the box.For WE8 specifically, learn how to use the short chip (sqaure+R1) as you are breaking in on the keeper, since they never stop that. The double tap cross is also great. Originally posted by hurworld:Questions on the 360 version: How does it play on Xbox Live, and does it support 16:9 widescreen?plays pretty well depending on connection.
Its a direct connection I believe so if your opponent is far away the game can be pretty painful. Between me and my friend we played about 10 games and only 2 were lagged to hell.
Everything is synced so if there is terrible lag/packet loss it's felt by both sides. (I know w/ WE9 PC each side took turns hosting so it was bad for each player in diff halves) It doesn't help that you can't see the level of lag to the game you're about to join (that I saw anyways).AFAIK it supports widescreen (i was playing at my buddy's house so I don't know how everything was set up)The only negative IMO is that XBOX live is single player only.
I can understand the reasons tho. Given the weak AI (compared to a human player), two players one side can be devastating. EDIT: upon hindsight, thats probably not the reason at all. Probably just has to do with increased complexity.also, super cancel FTW! We8 is GREAT on the pc. You must get the Phoenix mod/roster update for it.
(was by far my favorite football game for quite some time. I tried we9 but gave up at the time because there weren't any mods/patches available.edit: The phoenix update (and there are others as well) do things like update rosters, kits, stadiums, balls, boots, etc. It renames teams, leagues, cups, etc to the proper name (English league to EPL, Man Red to Man Utd, etc.). Originally posted by DaGene:Winning Eleven/Pro Evolution is indeed the greatest soccer game franchise in the history of soccer games. The man is absolutely right.I've always disliked the FIFA series but I've been playing PES on the PC and have spent hundreds of hours on each of the last three games: PES4, PES5 and now PES6.My biggest problem is an absolute lack of friends who are willing to give the game a shot. I need some human competition - beating the AI 13-0 on the highest difficulty (15 min. Matches) get old over time.Graphically I can't wait for their first true step into 'next-gen' consoles (X360 version seems semi-lame) and thus the modern PC era.BTW. I can only recommend buying a dual-shock like gamepad (as the PC games thus far have been based on the Playstation versions).
I use a DualShock 2 and an adaptor, but I really don't like that pad. It's good for the game, but bad for my hands. Fifa wasn't bad til 2000 or so. =) and actually the new one isn't too bad (because they ripped a whole lotta features from WE/PES) its still a bit too arcadey for me.i've played winning eleven on 4 diff platforms and my experience has been the best on the PS2, with the 360 a close second. Xbox was terrible (have to use the black and white buttons. Ughhh), PC is ok but i can't get the right joystick to work like on the ps2. I use the gravis eliminator aftershock on the PC.
The layout is pretty close to the PS2's dual-shock but like i said earlier the right joystick doesn't work too well. Originally posted by DaGene:fifa wasn't bad til 2000 or so.

Then, I got 07 for my xbox this past Christmas and was extremely surprised.they really had ripped off WE so much that I'm actually leaning toward preferring the fifa series at this time (as blasphemous as it sounds). I don't think you can really go wrong with either at the moment as EA is making their series so similar to WE that it is almost a clone.
